About Deb

Let’s Reach Your Goals Together

I will help you recognize and recover from secondary trauma using my R.E.S.E.T. method because many educators don’t realize the stress and emotional weight they carry isn’t burnout; it’s the accumulation of the trauma their students have experienced.

Through training and consulting, I will teach you how to protect your well-being so you can stay compassionate, effective, and whole, without absorbing the pain of the people you serve.

In Classrooms All Around the World

There are professionals who show up every day for people in crisis. They steady the chaos. They absorb the stories. They carry the emotional weight so others don’t have to.

However, no one teaches them what happens when those stories begin to stick.

Deb Alverson is not only a certified school counselor and certified educational administrator. She is THE secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout specialist who helps educators understand, prevent, and recover using her R.E.S.E.T. method. Her work focuses on the invisible cost of caring and educating, through the emotional residue that accumulates when serving individuals who have experienced trauma.

My Philosophy is to enable educators by:

Harnessing Your Potential

You don’t have to choose between caring and surviving.

The best educators are not the ones who give everything away. The best educators are the ones who learn how to protect their emotional health so they can stay in their profession long-term.

Your compassion, empathy, and ability to teach aren’t the problem.

Lack of emotional protection systems is.

By working with me, together, we will build sustainable emotional health in education.

I help educators and school systems:

a) Develop secondary trauma resilience and authenticity strategies;

b) Build trauma-informed professional cultures;

c) Create emotional sustainability plans for education professionals everywhere.

Moving Forward Together

The goal of addressing secondary trauma is not to avoid the emotional weight of this work. It is to hold that weight without losing ourselves beneath it.

As educators, we are often the steady adult in a child’s storm. To remain steady, we must anchor ourselves first. That means acknowledging limits, honoring emotional labor, and giving ourselves permission to care for our own nervous systems.

-Deb Alverson-

Secondary traumatic Stress is defined as:

“the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another”

(National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2023)

It is closely linked to compassion. Fatigue or burnout can mimic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Because secondary traumatic stress (STS) develops slowly, many educators normalize the symptoms as "stress" or just "part of the job".

Left untreated, STS has consequences for educator wellness and ethical practice.
