Bringing out the Best In You

You may have tried the bubble baths or the deep breathing, maybe even both. You may have even talked to your doctor, a therapist, or a friend, and you still feel the same heaviness every day. The reason nothing has worked is that you have likely been treating the wrong condition. Burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue look similar on the surface but require completely different responses. Allow me to offer you a complimentary virtual appointment where I will match your specific, daily-life symptoms to the correct condition so you finally understand why previous advice fell flat and what will actually help.

Why Getting the Name Rich Changes Everything: Burnout is an organizational energy problem, secondary traumatic stress is a nervous system response to absorbing student trauma, and compassion fatigue is an erosion of your capacity to care. Each one responds to different interventions. When an educator tries to solve secondary traumatic stress with burnout strategies, they feel worse because the mismatch confirms their fear that they are beyond help. Naming the right condition is the beginning of healing from the inside out.

Personal Invitation

Learn the accurate name for your experience and leave our conversation with one strategy that manages it. That is more targeted support than most educators receive in an entire career.

However, one strategy is a starting point, not a sustained recovery plan. If you choose, after your complimentary consultation, you can obtain the full framework for building authentic resilience as an educator so you can protect your emotional health every day, stay connected to the educator (you) who began your career, and rebuild the energy and lightness you have been missing.

Let’s Take a Deeper Look

Burnout...

…is an organizational energy problem. It develops when the demands of your work environment consistently exceed your resources. You are given too many students, too many responsibilities, too little planning time, too few supports, and too much pressure to perform under impossible conditions. Burnout makes you feel exhausted, cynical, and resentful toward the systems and structures that are failing you. The core experience of burnout is depletion. You have given everything you have, and there is nothing left.

Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS)...

…is a nervous system response to absorbing your students’ trauma. It occurs when you hear about, witness, or sit with the firsthand trauma experiences of the children in your care. Research defines it as “the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another” (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2023). STS can mimic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder: intrusive thoughts, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional reactivity, and avoidance. The core experience of STS is activation. Your nervous system has absorbed trauma that does not belong to you, and it is responding as if you lived through it yourself.

Compassion Fatigue...

…is an erosion of your capacity to care. It develops gradually as your emotional reserves are worn down by sustained exposure to suffering. With compassion fatigue, you may notice that you feel numb when a student tells you something that would have once broken your heart. You may catch yourself going through the motions of your job without feeling connected to the students in front of you. The core experience of compassion fatigue is disconnection. The part of you that chose this profession because you cared deeply has gone quiet.
